Feng Shui is literally translated to as “wind-water” in English. It’s a 3000-old Chinese system that studies the flow of life energy or normally referred to as “Qi” (pronounced as chi). The Chinese believed that if one could balance this life energy, he will have good health and fortune.
In earlier times, Feng Shui was used to orient structures such buildings, houses and even tombs in a favorable manner. Feng Shui practitioners during that time use local features such as constellations, the sun or bodies of water. They believed that by allowing a smooth flow of life energy through the structures will mean an abundant life for the dwellers. Feng Shui is an art that has evolved from its earlier forms. Practitioners now use tools such as a Feng Shui compass to get deeper information about the flow of energy in different areas of the house for example. It’s a band of concentric rings arranged around the magnetic needle. You will see this tool quite often used by Feng Shui practitioners. Another tool that practitioners use is what they call a bagua. It’s an octagonal grid containing symbols of the I Ching, the ancient oracle on which Feng Shui is based. Because of the 1960s Chinese revolutions, Feng Shui has been suppressed. In present time however, it’s seeing an increase in popularity.
Feng Shui is known to the world as the science of flow of life energy. Nowadays, it has also become an art form. Interior designers have started to adapt Feng Shui in their work. It’s not a requirement for them but there’s been an increase in numbers of people who would prefer to have their house designed with Feng Shui in mind. One could think of modern interior designing as both for aesthetics and functionality. Aesthetics for beauty, and functionality to promote smooth flow of life energy. Feng Shui has also become a source of income for many. Feng Shui products started to emerge lately. From gold plated frogs, cat figurines and Chinese designed mirrors; they have adopted it a lot of things just to boost marketability. Surely with the promise of good health, increased financial earning potential and an abundant future, it has attracted a lot of consumers.
There are schools now claiming to teach Feng Shui. This system however has been passed down poorly. Most probably because there aren’t really some credible references that they do work and we’re not sure if there is a process that needs to be followed to do this. Even with this mystic cloud all over Feng Shui, many people claim that they do work.
Feng Shui has gained popularity all around the world. From the great walls of China, to the Eiffel Tower in France, people now certainly, at least has an idea of what it is. The promise of a happy abundant and luxurious life is certainly enticing. There are a lot of things that can’t be explained by science but still works. So to the laymen, it’s a choice to believe in Feng Shui or not.
